Origins
Established in 1917, Toto's beginnings mirrored Japan's growth. In the first half of 1917, Toto manufactured products to meet the demands for modern, brand new urban housing. It had the first tunnel kiln in the nation that could produce ceramics continuously. It also pioneered the use of automation to control production, allowing for greater efficiency and consistency.
In the late 1980s the company began to expand overseas to take advantage of sales and new markets. The company created the Cera Trading Company to import and distribute other products of other manufacturers to expand its line of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. This strategy helped increase sales and expanded the firm's global market share.
In the 1990s, Toto began to focus on research and development of water-related appliances. It also improved its system of distribution to better serve its customers and improve profit. The company also employed the just-in time approach in its supply chain management as well as sales program. This resulted in a greater level of customer satisfaction.
Toto continued to develop toilet technology. The latest toilet, for example is equipped with a strong tornado flush that is more eco green than traditional toilets. The company also uses recycled water in its manufacturing process and has a green procurement policy. Toto also produces bathtubs, faucets, and hand dryers that have higher energy efficiency than conventional models.
The first museum of the company was opened in 2015, and it has exhibitions on Toto's most iconic products and their evolution, its group companies (all having to do with ceramics), history of plumbing and products like bath units and, in a different gallery, Toto products sold around the world. The museum has a bathroom with a WASHLET as well as other toilet innovations.
Before forming Toto, members of the band did sessions for many musicians. Keyboardist David Paich, drummer Jeff Porcaro and guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather all performed on the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs. They also performed on records by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.
